The competition to attract the world’s best talent is fierce and attracting them is a huge challenge for Canadian businesses. Despite increased investment in research and development and the fact that Canada produces high quality graduates and attracts highly skilled immigrants, there are currently more than 54,000 vacancies in the education sector of technology.
Our immigration system will be under enormous pressure to be efficient considering the consequences of covid-19 and the demographic reality of Canada. By 2035, another five million Canadians will retire, reducing our worker-to-retiree ratio to 2 to 1 (from 7 to 1 in 1971).
The government has often demonstrated its ability to change the way it thinks about immigration. It must now assert a culture of headhunting the strategic professionals needed to fuel and energize Canada’s economy for generations to come.
